Ahlers is also the father of a 16-month-old son.Update on memberships for 2020 we have decided to change the date of lock changes. Besides his entrepreneurial pursuits, Ahlers also finds time to represent his district in the South Dakota House of Representatives where, ironically enough, he is charged with solving the state’s problems. Ahlers said he is thinking about sponsoring poetry readings and perhaps providing an extra meeting room and an extra kitchen in the back for groups which hold meetings there, The caf already has served as a site for a wedding reception and one or two graduation parties. We struggled with the same thing at the video store and we’ll struggle with the same things here.” The Jabberwock also features musical acts. And it takes time for people to realize that you’re open. “But you have to be open when people are there. “Most people are used to having a business close at 5:30 p.m.,” said Ahlers. Ahlers said that since the Jabberwock Caf is off the beaten path, it will take perhaps a year for it to become a popular hangout with community residents. Sundays have been a little slow, he acknowledged, but the customer traffic has been generated largely by word of mouth, with little or no advertising. “We wanted to create an atmosphere that would appeal to everyone, whether they’re college students, older couples, ladies groups or members of the local gun club,” said Ahlers. Ahlers said the items his caf offers are on par with the fare that Sioux Fall cafes offer, only in a small-town setting, and at lower prices. There is a bookstore in back, and Ahlers also showcases the work of local artists on the caf walls. The shop also features bagels, muffins, coffee cakes and breakfast items. The Jabberwock opened in late January, offering different types of coffee and traditional Italian caf-style drinks, as well as hot chocolate and tea. He also opened a Video Plus store on Highway 77. Ahlers and his wife, Amy, moved to Dell Rapids where he purchased the future site of The Jabberwock at the corner of Fourth St. He operated a Video Plus store in Hartford, and later he opened another location in Tea. Ahlers said he considered a career in his chosen field, but the siren call of small-town America was just too strong for him to ignore. He worked a full-time job at Menards to pay for his education. Following high school, Ahlers enrolled in Augustana College where he followed another passion: government and international affairs. He returned to Dell Rapids during his senior year in high school to help care for his grandfather who had fallen ill. He and his family moved to Rapid City when he was a youngster. I like a challenge.” Ahlers was born in Dell Rapids. “For a long time, main street in America has been considered a thing of the past,” said Ahlers. Ahlers believes in the importance of small towns to the economic vitality in America, and he’s willing to fight for his beliefs. The purpose in opening the caf couldn’t be more serious, however. “You know, attempting to solve the world’s problems and things like that,” he said. Owner Dan Ahlers said “Jabberwock” is a catch-all phrase for the off-the-wall banter that takes place when friends gather in an informal setting. By Duane Winn There is a hint of humor behind the moniker of “The Jabberwock” caf in Dell Rapids, S.D.
